Hog Bay

is one of the magic spots I have found for taking photographs year round. It is a an inlet bay on Georgian Bay between Victoria Harbour and Port McNichol, Ontario. Until 1976 (or thereabouts ) a very long railway trestle (CPR) came over this bay. At Port McNicholl, large grain elevators are still standing that received Western grain from grain ships, for loading into grain cars, for further transportation to the East. Port McNichol was also a point of landing for passengers of lake ships coming from Thunder Bay.

The end of the bay is marsh, wetland. Trumpeter swans are being re-introduced here in the past few years, part of a program out of the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre. WMWC is located about five miles to the west near Midland, Ontario, and on the Wye River which runs out to Georgian Bay. Two other major tourist centres are located there: Martyrs' Shrine (built in 1927) and Ste. Marie among the Hurons (1640s fortified French Mission, a reconstruction of which was built in 1967).

The old track bed is being used as a trail. When I stop at this spot to take photographs I can take photos of wildflowers, plants of various heights, colours, textures, as well as landscape type photos of ponds and their reflections, channels of water through the rushes that drain out to the bay, and patterns of textures and colours both closeup and long distance.

In all seasons it is a special spot.
