the old mud road

William Gibson

Only the old mud road
pushed at my toes this morning

I had nothing pressing
in my daybook

my hair was combed
clothes whiter than white

the seamless display
of the woods and sky

hurried me along
pursuing health.

I would not catch it

clock time and middle of the night time
hospital time

recalibration and adjustment
irony exhaled with every thought

lessons learned with the pain of knowledge
shimmering dappled ground

the sun dripping through
nerve endings lighting like a cigar after a good meal

who is the giant bullying me
