Cougar

William Gibson

Only the female and I watched him pace
she not overly concerned
rolling over on her side

in the late afternoon sunlight
stretching her back
on the warm grass

his muscles rolled and rolled
as he moved quickly around their enclosure

I watched his feet push off from the earth
the light on his fur at the shoulder

his eyes that slid over me
as he turned and walked away

and then walked again towards me
and the fence that separated us.

When I put the camera to my eye,
the long lens focused past the wire,
an old optical trick,
so that the fence between us disappeared

and I felt that he would walk
straight into my thighs

and knock me over and the female
might get up then

from the warm grass
