![]() ![]() For fun I made a quick pencil and ink sketch of one of Lartigue's photos as I was preparing this article. For those having trouble with my sketch, it is an early aircraft, a glider, on a sand hill from 1904. W.J. Gibson |

Jacques-Henri Lartigue 1894-1986 - French Photographer
by William J. Gibson
Movement
Family members, his cat, the ball. Everything, anything.
The ladies in their dresses, their beautiful hats.
Kites, gliders, airplanes, racing cars, motorcycles, balloons.
The racing cars bent with motion. The hoods of the touring cars, endless.
Movement, people, place, the richness of the moment.
Born: 1894 into a wealthy French family.
First Camera: 1902.
Lartigue began a life-long photographic adventure at the age of eight. He kept journals of his photographic ideas including sketches. As he grew up he became a painter and worked in cinema. He always considered his photography a hobby, a secondary pursuit. Until a show in the 1960s.
There are no photographs quite like his, not of his life in that time, before World War One, and after. His photographic output a family album of 250,000 photographs and countless journals.
