Bank Holiday Weekend Sunday Dublin 7:00 AM June 2, 1996 by William J. Gibson

Walking with two cameras and a camcorder
technology tourist in extremis,
west to Halfpenny Bridge
I see the lovers
hugging, kissing, smiling.
The sun's just over the buildings
Saturday night's litter moves softly
everywhere.

then the young fella and his pal
are stepping over the LIffey
past the lovers
a full night's party taken on
and more

the young fella yells at me
laughing, smiling I am camcording
I turn and say
"You want in the picture?" "Okay."
And I record him.
He laughs and waves his arms.
His pal says nothing
he is already crossed
they are looking for breakfast
the young fella talks to me.
He explains the countdown clock to 2000
"They have to clean it every 3 days.
What a waste of money.
They should have got a sculptor
to make a little statue.
What will be the good of the thing after 2000."

I ask him what he plans to do to
celebrate that day.
He says, "I don't know if I'll be alive."
Every drop of cheer drained away in a second.
He asks me where I'll be.
I say, "On a bridge in Paris."

But I wasn't.
