Deep Winter by William J. Gibson

the cat follows the sunshine
across the floor
protesting winter

with a silence that is one part
annoyance and one part
heat and the first part
reflex and need
all rolled up
like
cookie dough ready for the oven

I pick up the phone to call
about
a cheap flight to Florida

The sun outside is so bright
it hurts my eyes
in a way
summer
never can

the blue sky
bright metal bright
one cloud light
like
cheese cloth shining wax
on a blue car's hood
