Reading 12 - Photography Books: McCullin, Smith, Capa Don McCullin, Unreasonable Behaviour Photojournalist's memoir takes him from his beginnings in the UK through war in Viet Nam and to the terminal illness of his wife. I picked up this book while just browsing in my old neighbourhood library in Toronto. Sat down at a table in the library not expecting to do more than flip a page or two, but then I opened it up and then speed read the book for the better part of an hour. A terrific read and the photos selected for inclusion and the accompanying description of them and the time in the author's life when they were made are both excellent. Hearts of Darkness, a collection of McCullin's photos is in my personal library. Highly recommended. Dream Street: W. Eugene Smith's Pittsburgh Project, edited by Sam Stephenson In 1955, Smith, the master of the photo essay who had recently resigned his position as a Life Magazine photographer, went to Pittsburgh for a freelance assignment expected to last 3 weeks to photograph the city. It turned out to be more than that. He made up to 17,000 photographs during the years 1955 through 1958. The photographs show Pittsburgh in all its elements, in all its levels, in all its hearts. Robert Capa: The Definitive Collection. Edited by Cornell Capa and Richard Whelan. Phaidon. 937 images taken by Robert Capa between 1932 and 1954. You may not know it but you have seen photos taken by Robert Capa, widely considered the greates combat photojournalist of the 20th century. His images of Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944 have been widely reproduced. His photo of a soldier being shot in Spain in 1937 is one of the most seen photographs of the 20th century. Highly recommended.
